Probing ligand effects in the gas phase using mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy

In organometallic chemistry, especially in the field of homogenous catalysis, the design of catalyzers is often devoted to the development of new ligands which will be able to orientate the reactivity of the metal center towards higher reaction yields or new reaction pathways. The effects played by the ligands are mostly decomposed into two parts : a steric part and an electronic one. Understanding and measuring these effects has a crucial role to help for the improvement of the molecules design and many experimental methodologies have been proposed over the years in this context. Our group has been particularly involved in the development of two approaches based on mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy to probe these effects. An overview of these methods will be given, in particular the results obtained for a family of cyclopentadienyl iron complexes.
