Vaporization of a liquid or solid sample opens the way to numerous techniques (mass spectrometry, resolved spectroscopies), and is an important step in the analysis of biomolecules. Introducing neutral systems in the gas phase may however be tricky for fragile molecules for which the existing techniques (heating, laser desorption) only suit the most simple systems. In this context, the intern will work on a new vaporization technique based on the dissolution of biomolecules into supercritical CO2. Applied to small peptides and sugars, this technique aims at characterizing the structure of isolated systems by means of conformer-resolved IR and UV laser spectroscopy, interpreted by quantum chemistry calculations. The intern will have the opportunity to work on both experimental and theoretical aspects of the larger ANR-funded collaborative project VAPOBIO. She/He will work together with a PhD student within the team “Structure et dynamique des systèmes complexes isolés photoexcités” (SYSIPHE) located at Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay (ISMO). This internship may be followed by an application to a PhD thesis in the group in the fall of 2024.
