The association of ions of opposite charges, such as (R-COO-, M+) where M is an alkali metal, leads to molecular ion pairs where the group R lies in the intense electric field produced by the ionic moiety (GV m-1 range). By varying the nature of the metal M, the electric field can be chemically-tuned in a controlled way, inducing significant spectral shifts, namely Stark effects, of the IR and UV chromophores within the group R.

The main aim of the internship will be to use quantum chemical methods to calculate these electric fields and compare them with the spectroscopic data obtained by collaborators located in Japan. Therefore, the intern will explore a new interface between experiment and theory, and will be given the opportunity to participate in the meetings with the Japanese team on a regular basis.
