Jérémy Viau-Trudel obtains the EDOM award for his second year doctoral thesis oral presentation

Following the oral presentations of second year doctoral theses at the EDOM annual meeting on february 12 and 13, four awards have been attributed.
The winners are:

  • Jérémy Viau-Trudel (ISMO), Atomic and Molecular Physics and Plasmas:
  • Valérian Giesz (LPN), Nano photonics et Quantum Optics
  • Mélanie Pedrazzani (LAC), Optics, Lasers and Applications
  • Jérémie Richard (LCF), Cold Matter

This award is associated with a fund of 300 euros for covering expends of an international conference.

Understanding the mechanisms that govern the photoreactivity of biomolecules

Two teams from the Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay (CNRS / Université Paris-Sud) and the Laboratoire de Chimie Physique (CNRS / Université Paris-Sud) have developed an experiment aiming at characterizing fragments issued from UV photodissociation of trapped isolated ions, by recording their vibrational spectrum. This work opens the way to the study of the photofragmentation mechanisms in many other complex systems such as peptides.

SILICON DOES NOT LOSE MEMORY" : The storage of an atomic ’bit’ can be reversibly controlled on a single silicon atom

For the first time , physicists from the Institute for Molecular Sciences of Orsay - ISMO ( CNRS / University Paris -Sud) , Laboratory of Materials and Quantum Phenomena - MPQ (CNRS / University Paris Diderot), Institute Materials Science of Mulhouse and the Institut Jean Lamour were able to control the state of charge of a single silicon atom without having to electronically isolate it from the substrate.

Cometary nitrogen provides new information on the solar system origin

A group of researchers from UTINAM Institute (CNRS / Université de Franche-Comté), Synchrotron SOLEIL, ISMO laboratory (CNRS / Université Paris-Sud) and the University of Liège have just published the first detection of the 15NH2 radical from cometary emission in the visible spectral range.

This detection was an observational challenge and helps to understand the origins of nitrogen-bearing molecules in comets and other solar system objects.

These results have been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Watching the heart beat of molecules

In a recent publication in Nature, researchers from the Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d’Orsay (France) report on a new method of rapidly identifying different molecular species under a microscope, with coherent Raman spectro-imaging with laser frequency combs technique.
