Vaporization of a liquid or solid sample opens the way to many techniques (mass spectrometry, resolved spectroscopies) and is an important step in the analysis of molecules. The introduction of neutral systems in the gas phase can, however, be tricky for fragile molecules for which the existing techniques (heating, laser desorption) are only suitable for the most simple systems. In this context, the intern will work on a new vaporization technique based on the dissolution of molecules into supercritical CO₂, followed by expansion of the mixture and the flash-vaporization of the molecules. Applied to biomolecules, this technique aims to characterize the structure of isolated systems by conformer-resolved IR and UV laser spectroscopy, interpreted by quantum chemistry calculations. The intern will have the opportunity to work on both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the collaborative project VAPOBIO funded by the ANR.
