Synthesis and drug delivery applications of iron(III) trimesate nanoMOFs

Nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (nanoMOFs) are promising for drug delivery due to their tunable properties, high surface area, and biocompatibility. We thouroughly reviewed their in vivo toxicity and biocompatibility, emphasizing remaining challenges in storage stability and « green » large-scale production. We designed multifunctional comb-like copolymers with anchoring units, PEG, and fluorescent moieties, which spontaneously coated nanoMOFs in aqueous media. These biocompatible copolymers ensured a good stability in biological media. We also set up novel synthesis routes of nanoMOFs, for « green » production at room temperature.
